US Inflation Historical Benchmark

Updated monthly with the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data
Is today’s inflation high or low? It depends on what you compare it to. This exhibit puts the latest monthly reading against a full century of U.S. consumer price data, so you can see where it actually stands.
Choose a 25, 50, 75 or 100-year window and every chart updates to that span. The report refreshes automatically each month when new data is published.
How to read it
- Start on the Overview page. It shows the current reading, how it ranks against history, and a glossary of the terms used throughout.
- Pick a window. The 25, 50, 75 and 100-year buttons change every number and chart on the page.
- Look for the highlights. Dark red marks the latest month; dark green marks the current era or administration.
